Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has entered a transportation service contract with German utility group Uniper after receiving its new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier named LNG Schneeweisschen.
As part of the deal, the carrier will carry out a number of journeys on behalf of Uniper Global Commodities, fully owned by Uniper.
To be jointly owned by MOL and Itochu, the vessel was delivered by South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) to MOL at the Okpo shipyard.
LNG Schneeweisschen has a cargo tank capacity of 180,000m³. It is powered by a slow-speed two-stroke engine (X-DF) built by Winterthur Gas & Diesel that can run on natural gas, marine gas oil (MGO) and heavy fuel oil.
The 297.9m-long and 47.90m-wide vessel also features the methane refrigeration system-full re-liquefaction (MRS-F) solution developed by DSME.
MRS-F is designed to work with the high-efficiency X-DF engine to re-liquefy extra boil-off gas and returning it as LNG to the cargo tank.
Both the X-DF and MRS-F technologies are expected to make LNG Schneeweisschen more efficient and economical.
“The vessel, which features an 11.50m draft and membrane-type LNG tank, is capable of sailing at a speed of 19.5k.”

In June, MOL took delivery of a coal carrier, OI MARU, at Imari Shipyard and Works of Namura Shipbuilding.
Scheduled to serve JERA Trading, OI MARU was jointly developed by Namura Shipbuilding and MOL.
The vessel, which has a deadweight tonnage of 91,211T, is 249.97m long, 43m wide and features a depth of 18.70m.
